Originally on day 2 we were
planning to do what we referred to as the double D trip, being the two
parks of Drievlet and
Duinrell. Then less than a week
before we set out I was browsing threw Flickr and came across some
photos of this place called Apenheul
in The Netherlands. It's a large woodlands zoo that specialises in
primates, including a number of walkthrough encloses, and members of all
four of the great ape groups of Gorillas, Orangutans, Chimps and
Gibbons. Seeing all
the great apes was great, but I think the thing we enjoyed the most was
the walkthrough enclosures. Some of the animals are very tame, and we
did have Squirrel Monkeys and Ring Tail Lemurs climbing on to us during
the visit. Also of
interest might be this place called
Juliana Toren Family Park. Due
to the fact this was a last minute change of itinerary I never checked
for any parks in the local area, so only found out about this park
afterwards. It's located in the same town as
Apenheul. It's a small park,
mainly for young families, but looks like a good place to do as a bonus
trip for an hour or two after doing
Apenheul. |
